Texas Passes Sonogram Requirement for Abortion

Texas Legislature Passes Sonogram Requirement

CHRIS TOMLINSON, Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Legislature passed a bill Thursday that would require doctors to perform a sonogram before conducting an abortion.

Gov. Rick Perry declared the bill to be emergency legislation at the beginning of the year, and it now goes to him for signature. The proposed law requires doctors to conduct a sonogram at least 24 hours before an abortion and to provide the woman with the opportunity to see the results and hear the fetal heartbeat. The doctor is also required to describe what the sonogram shows, to include the existence of legs, arms and internal organs.

An exception to the waiting period was made for women who live more than 100 miles from the nearest abortion provider. In cases of incest, rape or fetal abnormality, the woman does not have to hear a description of the fetus.

Proponents said the law is necessary to make sure women understand what an abortion entails. Opponents say the measure would interfere in the doctor-patient relationship.

The bill passed both the House and the Senate with a two-thirds majority, meaning the law will go into effect immediately after the governor signs it.

State Rep. Sid Miller, R-Stephenville, said the legislation is among the toughest sonogram requirements in the nation. Only three other states require a sonogram for all women seeking an abortion.

I like that.
Show them the live human in their body before they murder it. Should have been done long ago.

I've always said if you don't want kids, you shouldn't be fucking. Now maybe some of them will own up to their actions.

This is a great step to the end of abortion. This needs to be taken up by other states now. Maybe there is hope... ???

mmm I take it your not pro-choice? Its like religion and politics and lately on this site pictures of a dead Osama! - everyone is going to have an opinion that not everyone agrees with. It is such a debatable topic, there is no easy yes and no answer, there are so many variables. People may think what they may do in such situations but unless you actually living that situation its impossible to really say what you may or may not do.

It is indeed a debatable topic. I'm all for the sonogram. I also understand that there are times when abortion is a necessity (mother risks losing life or limb, baby isn't viable, rape, etc). I think that there are going to be a lot more people that might start practicing safer sex too though since they won't be able to get this done with no afterthought any more.

Re: Texas Passes Sonogram Requirement for Abortion

Aren't you supposed to get an abortion before all the major organs form and when its still technically tissue.

Re: Texas Passes Sonogram Requirement for Abortion

Im all for it. If they truly get what they are doing, the sonogram will have little effect on their decision.

Re: Texas Passes Sonogram Requirement for Abortion

I think thats bull. Its their choice, the doctors shouldn't interfere if they want to kill them. We dont need more humans in the world.
