Teenage girl killed by pack of "aggressive" and "out of control" dogs.

Police said her injuries were "consistent with her having been attacked by dogs" - believed to be bull mastiffs and Staffordshire bull terriers.

The breeds have not been confirmed but early indications suggest there were two bull mastiffs and two Staffordshire bull terriers.

A fifth dog was contained and removed from the house in Chaucer Grove.

Neighbour Kenneth Lindsay said he heard gun shots being fired.

"I just heard gun shots. It was going on without me realising it," he told ITV News.

"When I heard the gun shots I came out of the door. There was a policeman talking to people."

He added: "I went down... to see what it was all about and the policeman shouted at me to get back inside and stay inside."

Superintendent Mark Kenny said: "First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family of the girl who has tragically lost her life.

"I understand this is an extremely distressing incident for all concerned, including the community, and we will work hard to establish the full circumstances that lead to this tragedy.

"There will be a significant police presence in the area, which will remain this afternoon and evening.

"We will be there to carry out an investigation and address any concerns residents may have."

Jade is believed to have been a pupil at Fred Longworth High School in Tyldesley and to have been visiting the house.

A post-mortem examination to establish how Jade died is expected to take place later tonight.

The dogs' remains will also be examined as part of the investigation, police said.

Re: Teenage Girl Found Dead Amongst 'Aggressive Dogs' In Atherton House

The article said the girl was visiting, Was she by herself? If not how was it that they would let the dogs attack her to the point of death? I understand that Bull Mastiffs are very large dogs but what the fuck. Why have dogs you can't control?

She may well have been on her own going to visit someone but they were not at home. Their door could have been unlocked - something people in close-knit communities do is leave a back door unlocked, at their own risk of course.

We used to and sometimes came home to find a friend or family member sat there watching TV eating my stash of Monster Munch!

Well Sharon you British folk are more trusting than us Americans. I would never leave my front or back door unlocked while i was away. I never leave my doors unlocked while I am home. I guess you British are probably more civilised than us Americans too. Good for you guys.

Teen Killed by Pack of Dogs

Poor kid, what a terrifying way to go

Teen killed by pack of dogs

A 14-year-old girl has been found dead in Britain after being mauled by five “out of control“ dogs, police say.

Police were called to a house in Atherton, near Manchester in northwest England, where they found the body and “were confronted by a number of dogs that were aggressive and out of control”, a statement said.

Four of the dogs, believed to be bull mastiffs and Staffordshire bull terriers, were put down humanely by armed response officers, while the fifth was secured inside the house.

The teenager named as Jade Anderson was believed to be visiting the house where she died.

There was no-one else in the house.

Superintendent Mark Kenny of Greater Manchester Police offered his condolences to the teenager's family and said the incident was “extremely distressing”.

“While our inquiries to find out what happened are ongoing, this girl's injuries are consistent with her having been attacked by dogs,” he said in a statement.

The dead dogs are being examined as part of the police investigation.

It is believed Jade was eating a meat pie when the dogs suddenly attacked.

Britain's Daily Mail newspaper reported that she tried to fight off the dogs but they overpowered her.

Neighbours said the five animals were a danger.

Friends described Jade as a quiet, timid and brilliant girl who they said was visiting the property to see a friend.

Each residence in the housing association estate has a backyard surrounded by high wooden fencing and at number five, signs at the front and back of the house warn, "Beware of the Dog".

A 15-year-old girl who goes to the same school as the victim described her as "dead shy".

"She (Jade) had a pie in her hand and has gone to bite it, she moved the pie and the dog's gone for her throat and then they have all gone for her," the girl said.

Another friend said the dogs at the house were large and aggressive.

"Every time you walk past the house they would be barking and barking and going mad," she said.

"You would jump out of your skin."

A man who identified himself only as Jade's uncle, asked for the family to be left alone.
"We don't even know what's happened yet. Jade was brilliant," he said.

Thanks for asking. I'm curious, too

Wikipedia has a nice definition.
