Run Over by a Street Sweeper

Pedestrian swept under street sweeper in downtown Nashville
September 7, 2012 6:04 PM

A man was transported to the hospital after being swept under a street sweeper in downtown Nashville early Friday morning.

Police were called to Second Avenue North between Broadway and Commerce Street shortly before 2 a.m. after reports that a pedestrian was hit by a car.

According to police, the man, Edward Batson, ran up to a street sweeper as it was traveling along the roadway and began kicking at the brushes.

The Metro Public Works employee driving the vehicle told the man to stop and he complied.

A short time later, Batson, believed to be intoxicated, returned to the street sweeper and began kicking at it again.

His leg was sucked under the moving vehicle, causing him to fall and the truck ran over the man's shoulder and arm.

Batson was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.* He was last listed in stable condition.

Metro police said Batson has been arrested more than 100 times since 1994 and many of the cases involved alcohol.

He has not been charged for Friday's incident.

Re: Run Over by a Street Sweeper

I just like the visual of some drunk guy kicking at the brushes like he stepped in dog shit and was trying to get it off, then gets ran over.

Reminds me of the song by Lacy J. Dalton, "God Bless the Boys who Make the Noise on Second Avenue", but, hers was a tribute to songwriters.

They really need to make some sweeping changes to that public works department.
