Bizarre how that the two largest nations on Earth aren't at this and will never be a force at this sport yet it just gets more and more popular.

Re: Official 2014 FIFA World Cup Thread

can't believe suarez is still in the game after biting an italian player in his shoulder. third time he did this in his career.
hope he gets expelled from the rest of the tournament as i don't see italy making the equalizer in the one minut to go so uruguay moves on to next round and italy goes home.

Fifa has opened disciplinary proceedings against Uruguay forward Luis Suarez after Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini accused him of biting during the South Americans’ 1-0 group D victory at the World Cup on Tuesday.

The probe means Suarez, twice previously banned for biting, may be hit with another lengthy suspension despite escaping punishment during the match.

“Fifa can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the player Luis Suarez of Uruguay,” the world soccer body said.

Fifa said Suarez and the Uruguayan soccer association had until 5pm Brasilia time on Wednesday to “provide their position and any documentary evidence they deem relevant”.

Fifa is probing what it called an apparent breach of two articles of the organisation’s disciplinary code. One covers infringements and the other offensive behaviour and fair play.

Suarez and Chiellini clashed in the Italian penalty area 10 minutes from the end of the match which sealed Uruguay’s progression and Italy’s elimination from the tournament.

Chiellini furiously pulled open his shirt to show the mark to the referee.
Strange that a beast like that is allowed to play football along with humans.

Italy failed to play a (at least) passable football and deserved to go out, but Uruguay is definitely the worst team of the four and blind referees shouldn't be allowed to ref in a WC.

Online punters cash in on Suarez’s alleged bite

Despite seemingly impossible odds, 167 punters in Europe have won money after placing bets that Uruguay striker Luis Suarez would bite another player during the ongoing World Cup, an online gambling firm said on Wednesday.

Winnings would be paid out even if football’s ruling body FIFA should conclude that Suarez did not bite Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini on the left shoulder in a match on Tuesday.

“Then they (FIFA) have seen something we have not. It was a bite,” Mikael Mellqvist, a spokesman for Betsson Group and currently in Brazil, told dpa by telephone.

The decision benefits punters like Jonathan Brack in Stenungsund, western Sweden, who bet 80 kronor (12 dollars) and won 14,000 kronor (2,077 dollars).

Mr. Brack, 23, told the online edition of the Goteborgs—Posten newspaper he planned to use the money for a trip to England to watch football with a friend.

His win could have been even bigger had he not heeded advice from another friend who cautioned him not to go ahead with his initial bet of several hundred kronor, citing the odds for a Suarez’ bite were at 175 to 1.

In all the 167 winners won 50,000 euros (68,000 dollars), Patrik Oqvist, chief marketing officer of Betsafe, part of the Betsson group, said by telephone from Malta.

Some winners have posted their winning coupons on Twitter or made media interviews.

Norwegian national Thomas Syversen won 5,600 kroner (915 dollars) in the bizarre incident involving Suarez. “It is the craziest bet I have made,” Mr. Syversen was quoted as telling the Norwegian daily Aftenposten of his bet worth roughly 5 dollars.

The 23—year—old, who earns his living playing poker, said he did not see the incident live but saw replays of it. Mr. Syversen said Suarez, who plays for English Premier League side Liverpool, “is a great football player, but I am a Blackpool fan.’’

Looks like this rat can't control himself. If Suarez does not get banned from international competition I'll put a small wager he'll attack again.

Luis Suárez suspended for nine matches and banned for four months from any football-related activity

Quote:
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has reached a decision in the case related to Luis Suárez of Uruguay following an incident that occurred during the FIFA World Cup™ match between Italy and Uruguay played on 24 June 2014.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided that:

· The player Luis Suárez is regarded as having breached art. 48 par. 1 lit. d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) (assault), and art. 57 of the FDC (an act of unsporting behaviour towards another player).

· The player Luis Suárez is to be suspended for nine (9) official matches. The first match of this suspension is to be served in the upcoming FIFA World Cup™ fixture between Colombia and Uruguay on 28 June 2014. The remaining match suspensions shall be served in Uruguay’s next FIFA World Cup match(es), as long as the team qualifies, and/or in the representative team’s subsequent official matches in accordance with art. 38 par. 2a) of the FDC.

· The player Luis Suárez is banned from taking part in any kind of football-related activity (administrative, sports or any other) for a period of four (4) months in accordance with art. 22 of the FDC.

· A stadium ban is pronounced against the player Luis Suárez in accordance with art. 21 of the FDC as follows: the player Luis Suárez is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium during the period of the ban (point 3). The player Luis Suárez is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium in which the representative team of Uruguay is playing while he has to serve the nine-match suspension (point 2).

· The player Luis Suárez is ordered to pay a fine in the amount of CHF 100,000.

The decision was notified to the player and the Uruguayan FA today.

“Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field. The Disciplinary Committee took into account all the factors of the case and the degree of Mr Suárez’s guilt in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Code. The decision comes into force as soon it is communicated,” said Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

That doesn't really seem like much of a punishment, if you ask me.

Re: Official 2014 FIFA World Cup Thread

Group play was fun, but now it's time to pick up the intensity as the knockout stage plays out.

16 teams remain.

Predictions for Saturday: I have Brazil and Colombia going through to the Quarters. Brazil are heavy favorites and it's highly unlikley Chile will upset the hosts. Colombia vs Uruguay is gonna be good. I just don't see Uruguay advancing without their star striker, Suarez. Beyond that, Uruguay's other main threat, Edinson Cavani, hasn't been at his best. Advantage Colombia.
