Obama Has Interview on BET

Washington (CNN) -- After weeks of racial protests across the country, President Barack Obama is taking the time to deliver encouraging words about the future of race relations in America to a network that reaches a predominately young African-American audience.
"What I told the young people who I met with -- we're going to have more conversations over the coming months -- is, 'This isn't something that is going to be solved overnight,' Obama says in an interview with BET that will air Monday. "'This is something that is deeply rooted in our society. It's deeply rooted in our history.'"
Once criticized for shying away from the topic of race early on in his presidency, Obama has more recently been forced to lead a discussion on the issue.
In his interview, the President says African-American youth need to be both persistent and patient in order to make progress on the issue of racial tensions in America.
"It's important to recognize as painful as these incidents are, we can't equate what is happening now to what happened fifty years ago," the President said in the interview. "If you talk to your parents, grandparents, uncles, they'll tell you that things are better -- not good, in some cases, but better."
"The reason it's important for us to understand that progress has been made is that then gives us hope that we can make even more progress," he said.
The President also urged persistence in the effort to solve racial tensions, reminding the audience that typically progress occurs in "steps" and "increments."
"You know, when you're dealing with something that's as deeply rooted as racism or bias in any society, you've got to have vigilance but you have to recognize that it's going to take some time and you just have to be steady so that you don't give up when we don't get all the way there," he said.
In light of two recent back-to-back grand jury decisions not to indict white police officers in the deaths of unarmed black men, the President has vowed to take action.
Obama announced last week that he and outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder are "not going to let up" in the effort to ease racial tensions that exists between law enforcement officers and minorities in communities nationwide.

Its funny when you try looking this up, some headlines read; "Obama says things are better", others will read "Racism is deeply rooted"

Focal points make for misleading reading.

It's seems our media has become one big negative narrative about America. I read a lot of foreign news, and read a lot of comments left by people around the world.

It's weird how people from around the world are so interested in American news. And it's a nonstop flow of negativity. And so many it seems around the world think this negativity is what America is all about. All this division and disagreeing, especially on race has them all laughing at us. Even a country like Russia, from what comments I've read left by Russians, Russia is a very racist country. But even they are calling us a racist police state
Can you believe that? Russia is calling America a racist police state. Isn't that exactly what Russia is..

It is sad that they (the media) is what leads people around like brainless sheep, all over the world.

You'd think, common sense would be enough proof, to see neither of these recent incidents were racially motivated.

One was supervised by a black sergeant, someone with the power to tell the horrible, kkk, skinhead, white supremacists, cops too stop at anytime.

The other, could and has happen to any race, slapping cops around will win you a negative, maybe even deadly response, no matter what race you are.

The other, was simply poor form of communication. People should realize, in low poverty income areas, it isn't uncommon for 12 year olds to be shooting people. In many cases, that is the normal age for kids to be joining gangs, and one way of doing so, is shooting random people.

But alas, america riots over racial issues. And even while doing so, white people are falling into the same exact circumstances the three above mentioned. But never mentioned.

The sooner the black radical community, and the white guilt progressive community starts to accept it isn't an racial issue, and that it is a poverty issue, then maybe we all can together address and repair the real issue.

This protest, and riots, and so forth isn't going to fix or force people to not be racist. It will however force those people who were just passively prejudiced to go full blown hatred towards them.

The rest of the world should also look at the broader picture. If america was as racist as the media would portray us to be, would 14% of our over all population really get away with what they do?

Re: Obama Has Interview on BET

Ive always wondered what people would think if somebody made a White News Network. Would that be racist? Why then, when the shoe is on the other foot, is it not racist to have a Black News Network?

A WET or White Entertainment Television would be considered racist. Although many people will say CMT is white entertainment television.

But it's funny when you think about it. A lot of roles have been reversed in America.

It used to be dangerous for a black person to walk through a white neighborhood at night. Now it's dangerous for a white person to walk through a black neighborhood.

Their used to be political and neighborhood groups who only look out for whites. Now the groups are made up of mainly minorities with the objective to only look out for minorities. A white group doing this today would be labeled racist.

Whites used to think blacks couldn't be a part of the white community for many reasons. Now it seems blacks feel whites can't be part of their communities, especially white police.
This isn't all of America. It just seems to be an acceptable way of thinking.

You missed the point. Whether you believe prime time TV is "white" television or not. It's not called white television. And if a show or a network called themselves "white television" and made a lot of effort to make it all white. People would see that as racism.

I get that point and it does have some validity to it.. There is no way certain people wouldn't be outraged with a "White" channel.

It seems whites however do disproportionately have the majority of roles. We don't see "mixed" shows for the most part. 40% of actors in TV and films aren't black or hispanic or asian, that's for sure. The ones that are, seem to be on segregated shows. I'm assuming whoever started BET wanted to even the playing field and help get blacks more airtime..
