MP: Smacking Law Partly To Blame For Riots

This is in England... UK.

Quote:
A Labour MP has called for a change in the law so working-class parents can smack their children without fear of being prosecuted.

David Lammy, the MP for Tottenham, claims Labour's decision to tighten up the smacking law was partly to blame for last summer's riots in his constituency.

The former education minister said: "Many of my constituents came up to me after the riots and blamed the Labour government, saying, 'You guys stopped us being able to smack our children.'

So, from the first line highlighted in red, i take it that working class mothers and fathers can whack their children, but those in other classes can't lol.

Anyway, back on track, i had a few smacks here and there when i was a youngster, and i turned out fairly ok lol.

I respect my elders, and know right from wrong mainly.

Do you think children or teenagers should be given a whack or two when they get out of line?

Re: MP: Smacking Law Partly To Blame For Riots

lol

Any chump who believes this needs a big smack themselves.

Labour had 11 years in power and they were responsible for banning smacking of children or any discipline.

It isn't that actually. its the creation of ghettos, a welfare state that supports scum and the feckless whilst at the same time turning hundreds of thousands of young people into the "I WANT IT NO MATTER WHAT M8!" generation.

And who was responsible for this?

Why Labour and the Liberal Democrats ofcourse!

Re: MP: Smacking Law Partly To Blame For Riots

Exactly, it was a Labour Government who enacted Section 58 of the Children Act 2004! Essentially removing the availability of the defence of reasonable chastisement for all crimes, except Common Assault.

Although having said that, the CPS charging standards do actually say that if the assault causes 'no more than reddening of the skin, and the injury is transient and trifling' then a charge of common assault shall be brought and the defence will be available. Really, parents inflicting further injury upon their kids should be prosecuted; it's not justified.

What a complete idiot for even suggesting it had anything to do with the London riots though. How naive are some MPs!!

Re: MP: Smacking Law Partly To Blame For Riots

I had the odd smack and it didn't do me any harm but i have never had to smack my child or felt i wanted to when he was naughty. When he was younger i found the naughty step worked great and a firm voice. I've maintained the firm voice and stuck to my guns as he has got older and he's a great kid
My mate on the other hand smacks her child over any small thing and now her lad is immune to it. Whenever she smacks him now he just laughs and he is a complete tearaway in school. Can tell she is going to have huge problems. Also when she says she is banning him from the xbox she never sticks to it. So he knows no matter what he does he will still end up getting his way as she gives in for a quiet life.
IMO i really don't think smacking works. You're just teaching your child it's ok to use physical violence. But that said i was smacked now and then and i don't hold anything against my parents, i was a bit lippy when i was coming into my teens

lol, yea what you said makes sense, i think if the teenager has done wrong, a punishment should fit the offence, but i rarely tell mine off coz they are so good lol.

I believe in the right to smack. But any one who relies on it is kiddng themselves and doing the wrong thing i think.
I wouldnt have smacked my 3 once in a year. There are multitudes of other options.
