Mother and Son Reunited After 36 Years

May 23, 2013

Robin West got pregnant at age 15 and gave up her son for adoption. Almost 36 years later, they reunited.

The last time Robin West saw her son, she was 15 and he was given up for adoption. On Thursday, she and Andre 'Dre' Knight met for the first time in decades.

Giving up her baby hurt so much that she forced herself to forget most of that day. Robin West does remember she was 15 and, with no way to care for a child, in big trouble with her mom. She brought her boy into the world and held him for just a moment before he was taken away for adoption.

Little did she know that the boy she let go would follow in her footsteps as a musician.

Separated by almost 36 years and thousands of miles, mother and child were reunited Thursday at Orlando International Airport when West’s son, Andre “Dre” Knight, flew in to meet her for the first time.

“I thank God,” West said. “There is a God, because this is really kind of like a miracle in my life.”

Knight came to Florida on a one-way ticket, saying he’ll go back when he feels like it. The reunion is meaningful for Knight’s 15-year-old son, as well.

“I think what it does is allow me to give him a heritage and answer the questions he’s always asked me.”

Knight and his mother embraced outside baggage claim.

“I’m speechless,” Knight said. “This is the best day of my life.”

When they reconnected by phone about a month ago, they realized that they had both builtcareers in the music industry.

Both are pianists and producers. West, who recently moved to Malabar from Atlanta, runs a talent showcase called, “Small Town, Big Stars,” that gives up-and-coming artists a chance to perform in clubs and on an Atlanta TV show.

Knight produces artists in Los Angeles — he said his job is similar to being a movie director, and he has worked with artists such as Nicki Minaj and LL Cool J.

Knight said he searched for his mother for decades, but within an hour, his girlfriend, Andrea Bennett, found her on the Internet.

They had been debating Knight’s heritage. She tried the names on Knight’s birth certificate — his mother was listed as Robin Mullen a.k.a. Robin Booe. Neither name drew a match, but they did find a site for RW Productions and its CEO, Robin West.

He went to West’s Facebook page — the woman in the photograph had eyes just like his. Knight became cautiously excited. He noticed the name listed as West’s mother matched the grandmother on Knight’s birth certificate.

The search revealed a common love of music:West had posted online that she’s a singer-songwriter, her father was a pianist, her grandfather was a saxophonist.

Knight was shocked and started to wonder how he could contact her to tell her he was her son. He turned to Twitter.

“I figured it would be pretty easy to get her attention on Twitter,” Knight said.

At about 4 a.m., Florida time on April 28, he tweeted a message:
Robinsongwriter hey ms robin. I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Dre Knight. I’m a music producer in LA. Would love to build w u

He found a phone number on her company’s site, called it and heard her voice on the recording, but didn’t leave a message. He sent her a text that repeated his tweet.

Restless, he woke up every hour that night to check his phone. At 10 a.m., he found he had missed a call from her. She left a message saying she’d call back later.

He lay on his couch, looking at her Facebook profile, thinking about what he’d say to introduce himself.

“I certainly wasn’t going to start crying, I was gonna be real cool, you know?”

His phone rang at 11 a.m. — it was her.
“I’ll never forget this, she said ‘Hello, I’m returning your call,’ and everything went blank.”

He couldn’t remember what he had planned to say, so he simply told her: “You know Robin, I’ve been waiting for you to call me for a long, long time … My name is Andre Knight and I was born in 1977 in New York City … Robin, I’m your son.”

She was silent for a moment and then she exclaimed, “My son, my son, you found your mama!”

They talked for hours. He learned about his heritage. He told her about his career and the musical artists he’s worked with.

“I thought I knew happiness and joy before that Sunday morning, but I never knew what joy and happiness was before that,” Knight said.

Knight’s adoptive parents sent West an album of family photos on Mothers' Day. A month after that first Twitter post, they met in person.

“I wanted her to take that hurt and that pain, that burden she’s carried for the past 35 years, and put that away,” Knight said. “She’s not going to need that anymore. It’s time to write the next chapter, there’s a lot of life left.”

They talk regularly now. West said this weekend, she’ll introduce Knight to some artists for, “Small Town, Big Stars.” The pair plan to move forward in life.

“As long as we’ve got time left on this side of the earth, there’s always time to make things right,” Knight said. “That’s where I’m at right now, I’m really at peace.”
