Re: Magnotta Trial

More on his trial,
http://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/...nno/ar-BB9GMT9

MONTREAL—With the unspooling this week of a monstrous butcher-slaughter videotape, the first-degree murder trial of Luka Magnotta has officially descended into Grand Guignol theatre.

Canadian horror story. Or “Canadian Psycho” as Magnotta has been tabbed in the British tabs — and one of those writers, from the wildly popular wildly down-scale London Sun, will be testifying shortly via video link about his hotel room conversations with the accused, from a time when the Scarborough-raised Magnotta was still in a cat-kill state of mind, had not quite yet broadened his homicidal horizons to human beings.

Torture, sadism, murder: These were the themes Magnotta plumbed within the framing mechanism (hiding his own face) of a digital video camera.

Drugging, probably. Dismemberment, oh too clearly. Defilement, sickeningly. Sodomy. Necrophilia. A trailer for cannibalism to come in the longer, unedited version of 1 Lunatic 1 Icepick. (The short feature went by various names on various gore-porn websites when Magnotta uploaded his vile production to the Internet).

Madness, maybe. But not necessarily the crazies as they must be legally established for a court to render a “not criminally responsible” finding — that a defendant did not grasp the wrongness of the act committed or understand the likely consequences. NCR is what the defence is seeking, having conceded from the outset of trial the “physical part’’ of the charges, that Magnotta did it, though pleading not guilty.

From the reams of surveillance video retrieved by police, in the hours after he killed 33-year-old Concordia computer programming student Jun Lin on May 25, 2012 — Magnotta disposing of the implements of murder in green garbage bags, Magnotta trundling a wheeled suitcase containing Lin’s torso down the steps of his apartment buildings, Magnotta dividing up bloodied clothing and linen for depositing in the basement trash receptacles as if sorting the laundry colours from whites — it seems abundantly clear that the killer was going about his post-slaying business with meticulous consideration and precise movements.

He had a plan and it included escape, which is why Magnotta was on a flight to Paris the next evening, his passenger documents entered as an exhibit after an Air Transit security official gave his testimony for the prosecution on Friday.

Never forget, though, that while these were all heinous crimes — the five offences that have brought Magnotta to court facing the possibility of a life sentence — they were also gross entertainment, art-directed, scripted, for that purpose by the intensely narcissistic ex-porn actor and gay prostitute.

Magnotta reached into his creative genius (as doubtless he would have described himself) box of amateur filmmaker’s tricks to roll out all the special effect indignities, calamities and traumas he could possibly inflict on Lin — believe you me, beyond a normal person’s imagination.

Poor Lin began his lethal ordeal bound and gagged on his tormentor’s bed and ended it with throat slashed, although that really wasn’t the ending as Magnotta continued stabbing and puncturing and dissecting.

Having assimilated all that savagery, jurors returned to court Friday perhaps girded for more video bombardment. Instead what they got — in the mere half hour or so of actual evidence heard because court spent most of Friday disappearing up its own legal argument rectum, the jury excluded — was an almost blessed reprieve, verging on comical.

Out of the wings, making cameo turns, came the son of a former Canadian prime minister and the sister of a notorious Canadian school-girl sex killer.

Like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, wondering aloud how they’d wandered into this macabre set: Hubert Chrétien and Logan Valentini, nee Lori Homolka, younger sister to Karla Homolka, the sibling who wasn’t drugged and sexually molested and killed by Karla and Paul Bernardo.

It was Magnotta’s manipulations — clever, quite — which improbably brought these people together, fringe characters in the narrative.

As court has heard, Magnotta had an unexplained grudge against Stephen and Laureen Harper, referencing them both in cards dripping with malice affixed to parcels he sent through the mail, packages that contained Lin’s hands and feet.

Luka Magnotta is taken by police from a Canadian military plane to a waiting van in Mirabel, Que., after his arrest in June 2012. He is now on trial for the first-degree murder of Jun Lin.
Two of those Canada Post boxes were destined for Vancouver schools.

One of them had (misspelled) the name Hurbert Chrétien and Gatineau as return name and address.

Chrétien, testifying by video link, told Crown prosecutor Louis Bouthillier that, indeed, he does live in Gatineau and yes, that is his correct street address on the back of the box. But he’d never met Magnotta and never mailed any package to Vancouver. Cops had called and asked about the matter, back in 2012, said Chrétien. “I was surprised. I had no idea and didn’t understand. It was strange.’’

Somehow, Magnotta — schizophrenic and otherwise mentally ill, says his lawyer Luc Leclerc — had tracked down Hubert Chrétien’s name and address and, for reasons unclear, affixed them to a box that held Lin’s severed foot.

Leclerc, in his cross, suggested to Chrétien that he was well-known, being a prime minister’s son and all.

Chrétien: “My dad is better known.”

But Chrétien, who runs a non-profit organization that teaches scuba diving to the disabled, acknowledged he could be easily traced via Google searches. He added: “It was not agreeable that my name be used like this.”

Magnotta had a history of making boastful claims to fame long before he befriended, took home, and slaughtered Lin. It was fanciful thinking, jacked-up vainglory and basically a tissue of lies. Yet there was some cunning and, dare we say it, bizarre ingenuity, in how he implicated others in his crimes.

A prime minister’s son. An infamous killer’s sister.

Logan Valentini. She legally changed her first name in 1996; the surname she took upon marriage later. “I didn’t want to change my identification. I just wanted to be able to live my life quietly and free.

“I didn’t want to get a bad rap for something that didn’t have anything to do with me.”

Although, as Valentini granted, everybody in St. Catharines, where she lives, knows who she is, knows about the name change. That detail is all over the web. “Once it’s up there, you can’t get rid of it.”

She wasn’t at all pleased about her blindsided lassoing into these proceedings. Her name appears on a box, sent to a different Vancouver school, that contained one of Lin’s hands.

And, frankly, Valentini said she’s had a bellyful of notoriety by proxy.

“I was kind of stunned,” she recalled, when informed by police about her bizarre connection to the case. “I don’t know why I would be dragged into something again that I had nothing to do with.’’

It was Leclerc, for reasons unfathomable, who elicited from Valentini a startling tidbit of information about her hideous, felonious, sex predator big sister.

Karla Homolka — mom, wife, all those grown-up things denied her teenage victims — and last tracked by author Paula Todd to a rural house in Guadeloupe, is back living in Quebec.

Just when we thought the revelations of this trial couldn’t get any worse . . .

Rosie DiManno usually appears Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Yes. The Sun, Star and the Globe and Mail are the top 3 news outlets here.

Re: Magnotta Trial

So, what do you think the verdict will be? taking into account he was diagnosed with manic depression aka Bipolar when he was younger? Do you think he will get the "Not Guilty through diminished responsibility" et al? Watching the video of the murder he seems pretty methodical and organised and very much aware of what hes doing.

I would be surprised if they allowed a verdict that could see him set free one day. There has to be a very high chance of him doing this again if he has a chance, whether he's clinically insane or not.

I have no idea about the Canadian courts, but I can't imagine him being found not guilty, surely! The guy is a monster.
