Lou Reed, Rock 'n' Roll Pioneer, Dead at 71

Lou Reed, the singer and guitarist of 1960s rock band the Velvet Underground, has died.
He was 71.

Reed was known for his distinctive deadpan voice and deeply personal and explicit lyrics.

In a career that spanned more than five decades, Reed was a rock 'n' roll frontman, a glam rock god and an avante garde musician who defied categorization.

Lou Reed was born March 2, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York.

He moved to Manhattan in 1964 and began working as an in-house songwriter for Pickwick Records.

Following a minor hit with the single 'The Ostrich,' Reed formed The Velvet Underground, a band which didn't gain commercial success but which has a reputation as one of the most influential in the history of rock 'n' roll.

Sad. Loved his solo work and his stuff with the VU. He was so vicious...

Wasn't a huge fan, but his influence can't be denied.

Lotta great music woulda never been created without him to inspire it.

The cause of Lou Reed’s death was liver disease.

Dr. Charles Miller of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio - where Reed had liver transplant surgery this past April - said the former Velvet Underground singer was back at the Clinic last week for treatment.

Miller had performed Reed’s surgery earlier in the year and said the singer decided to return home after his end-stage liver disease could no longer be treated.

“We all agreed that we did everything we could,” Miller told.

So sad! I saw him in a couple of his personas over the years. RIP, Lou <3

In the off chance that I get married, I want this song played.

Sad to say I don't know who he was. But may be at peace.

**Lou's Final Days by His Wife**

Lou Reed's final days: Dazzling nature and tai chi, says wife Laurie Anderson

October 31, 2013

By Todd Cunningham

TheWrap

Laurie Anderson, the wife of singer Lou Reed and a musician in her own right, offered an insight into the rock icon's final days in a letter she sent to the local paper in Springs, East Hampton, the New York village where they lived.

Reed, who had been recovering from a liver transplant since May, died Sunday morning from liver disease at the age of 71.

"Last week, I promised Lou to get him out of the hospital and come home to Springs," she wrote in a letter posted Thursday by the East Hampton Star. "And we made it!"

"Lou was a tai chi master and spent his last days here being happy and dazzled by the beauty and power and softness of nature. He died on Sunday morning looking at the trees and doing the famous 21 form of tai chi with just his musician hands moving through the air."

Anderson and Reed, who influenced a generation of rockers with his raw and lyrical work with the Velvet Underground and subsequent solo career, were married in 2008.

"Lou was a prince and a fighter and I know his songs of the pain and beauty in the world will fill many people with the incredible joy he felt for life. Long live the beauty that comes down and through and onto all of us," she wrote.
