Libyan Militants Desecrate Commonwealth War Cemetery

The Federal Government is trying to determine if any Australian graves have been damaged in attacks on two war cemeteries in Libya.

Libya's leadership has apologised after armed men smashed the graves of British and Italian soldiers killed during World War II, in an act of vandalism that bore the hallmarks of radical Islamists.

More than 200 headstones in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in Benghazi were damaged, as was the Cross of Remembrance, the British Foreign Office said in a statement.

About one-quarter of the graves in the Benghazi Military Cemetery, including some belonging to Italian soldiers, were also attacked on February 24 and 26.

More than 1,100 Commonwealth troops, including around 50 Australians, are buried in the two cemeteries.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission says it will take some time to determine if the graves of any Australian servicemen have been desecrated.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the Federal Government was "appalled and disgusted by these reports, and condemns without reservation this act of desecration."

"Should the reports prove accurate, we call on the Libyan interim government to investigate and hold to account those responsible," the spokesman said.

Amateur video footage of one of the attacks, posted on Facebook, shows armed men, some wearing camouflage, casually kicking over headstones and using sledge hammers to smash a metal and stone cross.

One man can be heard saying "this is a grave of a Christian" as he uproots a headstone from the ground.

Another voice says of those buried in the cemetery: "These are dogs."

British and Commonwealth troops fought heavy battles against German and Italian forces near Benghazi during World War II.

This morning Acting Foreign Minister Craig Emerson said Australia condemned the attacks in the "strongest possible terms" but said it was not yet clear if any Australian graves had been damaged.

"There are 48 Australian graves in the [Commonwealth] cemetery," he said.

"We don't have information now, so I can't say that Australian graves have been affected," he said.

"But essentially we are part of the Commonwealth, we fought with our comrades in Libya, and so it is appropriate that the Australian Government condemns utterly and totally the desecration of these war graves.

"At this stage it's a matter of conjecture as to motives, but nothing excuses the desecration of war graves, whether they are Australian, whether they are British, and no matter who they are, nothing excuses that sort of vandalism."

The RSL says the destruction is outrageous, regardless of whether Australian graves were targeted.

"Young men gave their lives literally for the freedom of Libya ... and to be treated in such a manner is absolutely shocking - they've got no respect at all for anybody," NSW RSL president Don Rowe said.
Disgust

British foreign office minister Jeremy Browne said the damage was appalling but Libyan officials were just as shocked.

"They are embarrassed by what has happened so it is not the case that the Libyan people as a whole in some way endorse what has happened, this terrible behaviour," he said.

The National Transitional Council (NTC), Libya's interim leadership since last year's uprising forced out Moamar Gaddafi, said it would pursue those responsible.

"The NTC apologises for the incident with the foreign graves, especially the British and Italian graves," the council said in a statement.

"This action is not in keeping with Islam.

"The NTC will confront this matter and, in line with Libyan law, will pursue those people who committed this act.

"This action does not reflect Libyan public opinion because Islam calls for respect for other religions."

Benghazi residents who spoke to the Reuters news agency expressed disgust at the attack.

"No-one can deny that Britain, France, Germany and all the world sided with us in our suffering," during last year's conflict, local man Muftah Abu Azzah, said.

Another resident, Imad Mohammed, said: "This World War II cemetery was attacked by extremists and this is wrong ... Those dead people do not have any guilt."
Restoration

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission in London says safety risks could delay the restoration of the cemeteries.

"Clearly it's a volatile situation on the ground and we are working with third parties in Libya now to secure the cemeteries," said the commission's Matt Morris.

"As soon as that's done, our staff will go back in and they'll put temporary markers on all the graves that have been affected by these attack. And then over time the cemetery will be restored to its original condition.

"That will take some time ... headstones are big, bulky objects and it will take time to source them and to restore them."

The attack has sparked anger in the British press.

An editorial in the Mail On Sunday said: "All this would have been serious and sad enough if it had happened anywhere in the world. But it took place in Benghazi, headquarters of the Libyan revolution, which was helped to victory by British arms and British courage."

Yeah, it's not like it was retribution for the coalition forces burning Korans.

I have to ask the honest question. Would the world be a better place without these barbaric, women hating, religious freaks (no I'm not talking about Protestants-lol).

Seriously they just seem to piss every country off.

I don't think it's right, no matter what you believe, to destroy tombstones/graves, and religious buildings. My beliefs are not carved in stone yet, but, I just think it's not right and stupid at the same time.
