Leslie Van Houten Denied Parole

Quote:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Gov. Jerry Brown is denying parole for Leslie Van Houten, the youngest follower of murderous cult leader Charles Manson.

The Democratic governor said Friday Van Houten's "inability to explain her willing participation in such horrific violence" leads him to believe she remains an unreasonable risk to society.

Van Houten, 66, is serving life for the first-degree murders in 1969 of wealthy grocer Leno La Bianca and his wife, Rosemary.

The couple were fatally stabbed a day after other "Manson family" members killed pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four others.

Brown's decision overturns a parole board recommendation that Van Houten be freed.

Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey and relatives of the victims last month turned in signatures of 140,000 people opposing Van Houten's release.

Good news. She can continue to rot in jail.

Do you believe everyone who committed a murder (or who was present for one) should automatically serve the rest of their natural life in prison? Or do you believe that someone could be rehabilitated?

Truly curious--I'm always interested in the CJ system as a topic of debate. :)

Re: Leslie Van Houten Denied Parole

I judge that from case to case but considering the brutality of the murders she was involved in (the murder of Rosemary LaBianca) and the mutilation of her body. How she disrespected the victims by giggling during the trial.
I dont think a person who have shown such lack of remorse or respect for the victims should have a chance to be released into society again. No matter how rehabilitated they say they are. She have even labeled herself a "loaded gun" and insisted that she would have murdered someone even if not involved in the macabre Manson family.

Re: Leslie Van Houten Denied Parole

All she's done since entering prison is try to get back out again. From the very first opportunity (7 years after her initial incarceration) and every time since, van Houten has tried to get paroled. That doesn't sound like someone interested in being rehabilitated, to me. It sounds like someone desperately trying to worm their way out of serving their sentence.
If she hadnt been so gung-ho to get out from the start, I might be more sympathetic to the idea she's genuinely paid for her crimes and deserves a second chance. I don't think she gives two shits that every time she applies for parole she's ripping a fresh wound into the victims surviving family members. We don't need another manipulative sociopath walking the streets. Let her stay where she is.

Re: Leslie Van Houten Denied Parole

Well... People are trying to avoid going into prison before their sentencing and then they try their best to get out. Which is perfectly understandable. I mean, absolutely if someone was to get sentenced and surrender themselves to the reality that they are in prison and just do their time quietly without trying to get paroled or something like that, it would be commendable but I can't think of a situation where someone goes to prison and DOESN'T at least meet with their lawyer and make attempts to get out.

Re: Leslie Van Houten Denied Parole

Glad she was denied!

It must be very stressful for the relatives of murder victims hearing about the killer seeking parole and walking the streets again. No justice for the poor victims

And a relief is that Mr Manson himself will be over 90 years old next time he will be eligible for parole

I am honestly surprised he's still alive.
