"Bill Fadeley, a Jacksonville, Florida business owner and airboat captain, traveled from Jacksonville to New York City in 1986.

He called it his "Ride To Liberty."

"My boat broke and I had to get it fixed," said Fadeley laughing. "Then my body broke and I had to get that fixed."

The 1,100-mile trip took a toll on him physically and mentally.

He nearly sank in the Sapalo Sound, just north of Darien, Georgia just a couple days into the trip.

The journey was part record-breaking attempt, but mostly his effort to bring attention to Amnesty International.

He arrived in New York in time for the July 4th celebration of the newly refurbished Statue of Liberty.

As he pulled into New York Harbor, in front of nearly 20,000 boats, he unfurled his banner.

"It's faded now but says 'Free All God's Children Now,'" he said.

The trip was inspired in part by the still imprisoned Nelson Mandela, he said.

At the end of his trip, after bringing the boat back to Jacksonville on a trailer, Fadeley sent in his travel logs and a letter to the Guinness Book of World Records.

"I got a letter back that said 'Congratulations on your accomplishments and achievements, the only problem is there is no category for airboats."

In short: There was no record for Fadeley.

Now more than a quarter century later things have changed.

One such change was Guinness' heart when it came to Fadeley's record.

"I got a letter in April from them congratulating me, but this time for getting my record," he said.

He even made it into the book.

You can find him in the 2012 edition on page 121 under the heading 'Fantastic Voyages'.'
