*FAKE 911 CALL LEADS TO DEATH*

TEEN FAKES 911 CALL AND ENDS UP SHOT DEAD

There never was an armed man roaming the streets of the Sherrill-area Thursday looking for a vehicle to steal.

And it wasn’t an innocent motorist who called 911 dispatchers at 2:40 p.m. to say his silver Dodge Stratus was robbed at gunpoint by the suspect.

But authorities said they wouldn’t learn of these details until after a 10-minute vehicle pursuit that ended on John Peet Road, a rural dead-end road surrounded by cow pastures and fields where the suspect was shot dead after pointing a gun at police.

It was there that the 17-year-old driver from Madison County exited the Stratus with a black handgun — later learned to be a pellet gun — and refused to drop the weapon, state police said.

In response, Canastota police Chief James Zophy, a 17-year veteran, and Officer Sean Barton, a 7-year veteran, fired at least nine rounds, four of which struck the teen from about 20 yards away, police said.

The identity of the teen is being withheld until his brothers are notified about his death, police said. His name is expected to be released today. An autopsy also is scheduled for today in Onondaga County.

State police Capt. Mark Lincoln said the officers were correct in the actions they took in shooting the suspect.

The shooting marked the end of a chain of events that was triggered when the teen called 911 dispatchers and reported his own car was stolen at gunpoint by a man near a Tops store in Madison County, police said. The stratus did belong to a family member of the deceased, police said.

“Every indication suggests that he made the call and never was at Tops,” Trooper Jack L. Keller said.

Not long after the 911 call, authorities spotted the vehicle at the intersection of routes 5 and 13 in Madison County, where a chase ensued through the village of Canastota and then four miles away onto John Peet Road.

John Peet Road resident Joe Cesario — who said he owns 47 acres of land on either side of the road — was headed home with his wife from Wampsville Thursday afternoon when they saw the police vehicles on the road.

Luckily, he said, their children had not yet arrived home from school.

“What if I or (daughter Holly) were in the field because she sometimes feeds the cows,” Cesario said.

It's obviously planned suicide. He called the cops to say that car was stolen, he was being chased by the police for 10 minutes until he stopped and took out a black pellet gun and refused to drop it. If the kid didn't want to die he wouldn't have let the cops chase him for 10 minutes then refuse to drop a gun.

The cops thought he had a real gun, they didn't want him getting back up so they could be shot.
