Boiling Water Freezes Instantly in Siberia's -41C

Quote:
A Novosibirsk resident demonstrated the depths of the cold in his city by pouring a pot of boiling water into the air from one of the top floors of his apartment building, and watched it instantly turn into a cloud of frozen droplets.
The unidentified man showed a temperature reading of minus 41 degrees Celsius on his mobile phone before launching the water out the window.
The footage has emerged as severe frost affects large parts of Russia. In the far eastern regions of the country temperatures have fallen to minus 50 degrees Celsius, with minus 20 degrees Celsius recorded in central parts.
Meteorologists say that for some regions such low temperatures have not been recorded for more than half a century.

Yes it is.

There are reasons why the "off to Siberia for you!" speech was feared.

Nope - "particularly severe"

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/41...-elephants.htm

Just a week after it unleashed a brutal weather front across Europe which left six people dead, Siberia is expected to get even colder - with temperatures forecast to fall as low as -55 degrees Celcius.

Last week a front dubbed the 'Beast from the East' brought icy winds sweeping across the continent. Although Britain was spared the worst of the freezer conditions, temperatures still reached -6 in some parts of the UK.

Now the weather in Siberia is turning even worse. Although winter temperatures can range from -10 to -50 degrees Celcius, the current conditions are seen as particularly severe.

The Siberian population - human and animal - is struggling through the cold snap. In one particularly bizarre instance, trainers at a zoo in the city of Novosibirsk had to give two elephants an emergency swig of vodka to prevent them dying of frostbite and pneumonia.

It appears that this particular Siberian weather pattern is going to stay well away from Britain.

Re: Boiling Water Freezes Instantly in Siberia's -41C

The snowstorm that hit the Midwest on Thursday is nothing compared to the weather in Russia.

Russia has been experiencing record-breaking low temperatures that killed 45 people last week, the Moscow Times reported Wednesday. Nearly 270 people were hospitalized in Russia, more than half with frostbite. The temperatures are the coldest to hit the country since 1938.

Additionally, 37 people have died in Ukraine this month due to subzero temperatures.

Siberia has experienced even harsher weather, with cities like Novosibirsk dipping to minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday. With the icy wind chill, it felt like minus 47.

The cold in Siberia nearly killed two circus elephants after their trailer caught fire, RIA Novosti reported.

A Russian circus trainer claims he saved the lives of the two elephants by buying two cases of vodka from a nearby village, mixing the alcohol with warm water, and giving it to the freezing animals, named Magda and Jenny.

“After that they roared as if they were in the jungle. Apparently they were happy,” a district official said.

The freezing temperatures across Siberia, Russia and the Ukraine are expected to last through the middle of next week, according to weather forecasts.
