Australia: Morcombe Suspect Charged After 7 Years

Queensland Police have charged a man with murder in a major breakthrough in their investigation into the case of Daniel Morcombe, who went missing on the Sunshine Coast in 2003.

A 41-year-old man has been arrested and charged with a number of offences related to the case including murder, deprivation of liberty, child stealing and interfering with a corpse.

Deputy Commissioner Ross Barnett praised the "dedication, tenacity and professionalism" of officers involved in the biggest missing person investigation in Queensland history.

"This is obviously a very significant milestone in what has obviously been a complex and protracted investigation," he said.

"However, as the matter is before the court it would be inappropriate to discuss any aspect of the circumstances of the investigation and the arrest."

Police say there will be a search of bushland on the Sunshine Coast as part of the continuing investigation but no further details were provided.

More than 100 police officers have worked on the case, interviewing more than 10,000 people.

Daniel's parents Bruce and Denise Morcombe were notified by police of the breakthrough before the public announcement.

Commissioner Bob Atkinson says he has thanked the Morcombes for their patience and resolve.

"Our thoughts are with Bruce, Denise & family who never gave up," Queensland Premier Anna Bligh tweeted shortly after the police media conference.

The 41-year-old man will remain in custody and appear at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

Daniel Morecombe vanished while waiting for a bus in Woombye on December 7, 2003.

A coronial inquest into his suspected abduction and murder was held earlier this year.

Police Confirm Bones Belong to Daniel Morcombe

Bones belong to Daniel Morcombe - police
Monday, August 29, 2011 » 01:04am
For almost eight years his family has waited and wondered.
But now DNA testing of bones pulled from swampy Queensland bushland has confirmed the final resting place of missing teenager Daniel Morcombe.
Daniel was 13 when he disappeared from a bus stop at Woombye, on the Sunshine Coast hinterland, on December 7, 2003, only 12 days out from his 14th birthday.
He was on his way to buy Christmas presents when a bus running behind schedule passed him.
When a second bus came minutes later, Daniel was gone.
Forty-one-year-old Perth man Brett Peter Cowan was charged with Daniel's abduction and murder on August 13, sparking an intense search of bushland at Beerwah - some 30 kilometres from Woombye - involving up to 60 police and State Emergency Service volunteers.
Three bones were found at Beerwah last Sunday.
Days earlier, two shoes were found, the same brand Daniel was wearing when he disappeared.
Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said DNA testing of the bones confirmed late on Saturday night that they belonged to Daniel.
'This is an enormously significant result,' he told reporters in Brisbane.
'It's a very sad answer, but it's the answer.'
Mr Atkinson read a statement from Daniel's father Bruce, who said the news was extremely sad.
'We knew in our heart that the search area was Daniel's final resting place, the scientific confirmation is still enormously difficult to comprehend,' the statement said.
'For 7 years and 9 months it is that expected shock we have all been waiting for.'
Search efforts were again called off on Saturday because of bad weather, with Deputy Police Commissioner Ross Barnett saying it was not expected to resume for another 24 to 48 hours.
'Obviously we're keen to resume the search as soon as possible,' he told reporters in Brisbane.
'We're hopeful that more remains and other forensic evidence will be found; we can't be sure of course.
'As long as it takes, we're not going to walk away from that search until we have exhausted absolutely every area of search that we can do.
'It will be at least several weeks.'
Despite the foul weather, buildings on a ridge in the area where Daniel's bones were found would be searched on Sunday.
Mr Barnett said a white four-wheel drive Mitsubishi Pajero had been seized on Russell Island at Moreton Bay, south of Brisbane, as part of the investigation.
At the inquest into Daniel Morcombe's disappearance in April, a witness told of seeing a white Pajero with a vehicle snorkel near the bus stop where the Daniel was last seen.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said the discovery of Daniel's bones was every parent's worst nightmare.
'I think every parent would keep alive a little flame of hope and to have that flame dashed today I think is very distressing news for the Morcombe family and for all of us who have kept that little flame of hope alive,' she told reporters in the Torres Strait.
'I think every parent in Australia today will be holding Bruce and Denise Morcombe in their thoughts.'
Queensland MP, Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, used Twitter to urge Australians to spare a thought for the Morcombes.
'All of us should spend a while today thinking about the Morcombe family. May little Daniel now rest in peace,' he said.
The Morcombes will make a media statement at 1pm (AEST) in Maroochydore on Monday.

It's a shame we got rid of capital punishment in Australia after Ronald Ryan was hanged in 1967.You guys in the America have the right idea about what to do with POSes who kill & rape children.
At least they can bury Daniel now.

Re: Australia: Morcombe Suspect Charged After 7 Years

Shit, i didn't know he had a twin brother

He was supposed to go with his bro on that fateful day. Fuuuuuuck, that gotta suck

Quote:
DANIEL Morcombe's twin brother has spoken out about his grief for the first time.

Bradley Morcombe said the day Daniel went missing in December 2003 will haunt him forever.

Speaking to the Australian Women’s Weekly, Mr Morcombe said Daniel asked him to join him shopping that day but Bradley stayed behind.

"I wonder what might have happened if I’d gone with him," Bradley said.

"Perhaps it would have been both of us that disappeared.

"But I think that whoever came along probably wouldn’t have tried if there were two people. If I’d gone with him, it’s more than likely he’d still be here."

Now a fencing contractor, Mr Morcombe said his family had relied on each other during the eight years they spent searching for Daniel. He paid tribute to his parents, Bruce and Denise.

"Mum and dad are amazing people and I think they are inspirational," he said.

"The best thing has been that we can rely on each other, know when we need support and help each other through, even though sometimes it’s hard."

Police last week confirmed bones found at a search site on the Sunshine Coast were Daniel’s.

Brett Peter Cowan, 41, has been charged with Daniel's murder, as well as deprivation of liberty, child stealing, indecent treatment of a child under 16 and interfering with a corpse.

Bones sent to ancient DNA centre

The comments come as it was revealed a scientific laboratory known worldwide for its research into prehistoric bones was responsible for providing the long-awaited DNA breakthrough in the case.

The Courier-Mail understands three human bones, found in the Sunshine Coast hinterland 10 days ago, were sent to the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA (ACAD) at the University of Adelaide last week for specialist testing.

The world-class facility, which opened in 2006, is internationally renowned for its research of Ice Age megafauna such as the woolly mammoth and sabre-tooth cats.

It also has the superior equipment and ultra-sterile working environment required for the study of minute traces of preserved genetic material.

ACAD director Professor Alan Cooper, a leader in the field of ancient DNA, and his team worked around the clock to examine the bones - believed to be Daniel's - before confirming a DNA match on Saturday night.

Prof Cooper specialises in using ancient DNA preserved in bones, teeth and other remains - some more than 300,000 years old - to study evolutionary processes.

Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Ross Barnett said the bones were tested at the John Tonge Centre at Coopers Plains before being sent interstate.

"The bones were tested at two facilities and the result that we got came from a laboratory in Adelaide," he said.

Complex search for remains

Meanwhile, the hunt for Daniel's remains in bushland at the Glass House Mountains was suspended yesterday amid fears the alleged crime scene could be disturbed if SES volunteers returned to the site before the ground had dried from recent rain.

This comes after Mr Barnett said police had searched other "areas of interest" on Sunday, including buildings on the property, while they waited for conditions to improve.

"We are doing a very limited search of some buildings on harder ground in the area. There are a couple of outbuildings on a ridge, not far from the primary site," he said.

"Whilst we can't get down on to the primary site, we're searching some other places of interest to us."

He would not comment on the relevance of the buildings in the middle of the search zone at the Kings Rd macadamia farm.

Aerial photographs show two buildings have been removed from the farm in recent times.

But it was understood the land had been mapped to identify how it had changed since Daniel's disappearance almost eight years ago.

It was also revealed yesterday the Bligh Government has offered public funding towards Daniel's funeral.
