"With that singular act of courage, Kyle, you not only saved your brother in arms, you displayed heroism in the blink of an eye that will inspire for generations valor worthy of our nation's highest military decoration," Obama said.
Read President Obama's Full Remarks

After the ceremony Carpenter, who the President described as "still the same humble guy from Gilbert," showed his humility over what has happened.

"When the President put the Medal around my neck, I felt the weight of a nation," he said.

Carpenter still has no memory of the moment the blast happened--he says he doesn't think those recollections will ever return. But his fellow Marines who were there remember what Kyle did--and said--right after the explosion.

"Kyle kept asking if Nick was okay," Obama told the audience at the ceremony.

The toll on Carpenter's body was heavy. He would lose his right eye, and suffer injuries that one doctor described as ranging from his head to his feet. On the operating table, he flatlined three times; each time, though, he came back.

He spent the next two and a half years in a hospital, requiring nearly 40 surgeries, including skin grafts and a procedure to remove shrapnel from his brain.

While Carpenter saved Eufrazio's life, the man he rescued also has overcome much since that fateful day. The blast left Eufrazio with serious wounds, and he was not able to make Thursday's ceremony. During the tribute, Obama recognized Eufrazio's sacrifice, as well as the Marines who died during the same attack.

Since coming back to South Carolina, Carpenter, who's now 24-years-old, has become a student at the University of South Carolina, where he's thinking of majoring in psychology. His goal is to help others overcome adversity with his life experiences. Already, he's been sharing his story as a motivational speaker.

"Kyle is a shining example of what our nation need to encourage," Carpenter said. "Veterans who come home and use their incredible skills and talents to keep our country strong. And we can all learn from Kyle's example."

Very true. Luck also helps. My pop had a grenade go off on him in a closed room as he was moving to kick it back out the doorway it had been tossed through. All he caught from it was a piece of shrapnel in his left forearm that left a scar about the size of a quarter.

And really, Carpenter doesn't look too bad for a guy who took a grenade to the face. Seems the docs did a pretty good job with him. And if he can take a grenade, then he's probably tough enough to deal with the VA's bullshit as well.

Semper Fi, Marine.

I'd like to see what the damage was like for a before and after comparison. Although one can tell the plastic surgeon(s) did a great job of recontructing his face; very surprised at such a small amount of nerve damage. One would think he wouldn't be able to live let alone smile after an explosion so close to his face. Wow.

Ballistics is a very strange bird sometimes.

My pop told me a story about a battle buddy of his getting shot in the head when they were ascending a church bell tower to take out a sniper. My pop's buddy was wearing his helmet, and my pop saw the bullet enter the helmet and then strike the wall on the other side of the guy's head.

After he strafed the sniper, my pop approached his buddy and saw some blood trickling out of his helmet. He knew he had to take the helmet off to check the guy's condition, and he really didn't want to because he knew it was common for a guy's helmet to hold his head together even if his skull and brains have been blasted to complete shit; all you'll see is a little blood, and then the dude's noggin will just fall apart once the helmet is removed.

So my pop removed the helmet, and the only damage the guy had was a long deep gouge that ran around his forehead from where the bullet entered his helmet to where it exited. The fucking round had spun itself into a track in between the dude's helmet and his head, skirted around the outside of his skull, and exited out the other side of his helmet.

The guy was in a lot of pain when he regained consciousness and was concussed by the impact, but he eventually made a full recovery.

Like I said, luck plays a huge role in combat.

Do they even let ugly people into the Corps?

I was delivering to the Marine support base on the Westbank a little over a month ago and I saw the most smokin' gal walking by in her blues and khaki. She looked mixed, was very pretty, and good Lord DAT AZZ.
