A man who was shot by a home owner during an attempted burglary in Phoenix was sentenced to one year in jail by a Maricopa Superior Court judge on Friday.
Michael Lewis, 21, pleaded guilty to second degree burglary and aggravated assault in August as part of a plea agreement after he broke into a widow's house in May and fought with her. Lewis was shot by the victim and spent a month in a hospital recovering from his injuries.
Superior Court Judge Warren Granville also sentenced Lewis to 4 years probation for burglary and 3 years probation for aggravated assault, and gave Lewis the opportunity to leave jail early if he successfully completes a drug-rehabilitation program.

The victim, Cynthia Bulk, told Granville during the hearing that she is still recovering emotionally and physically from the incident.
"I'm still traumatized today," she said.
Both Lewis and Bulk still bore the injuries from the incident. The victim, who Lewis hit with a gardening tool during the burglary, was assisted by the prosecutor Jennifer Hanson to the podium to speak while Lewis limped up to the podium when it was his time to speak.
Bulk said she is unable to work because of the incident and relies on friends to help pay her bills.
"I'm asking please, don't let him do this to anybody else," Bulk said.
Lewis said during the hearing that he regretted breaking into the house and attacking the victim.
"I'm sorry," Lewis said. "I wasn't me that day."
Lewis's attorney, Robert Webb, asked Granville to consider the defendant's history with schizophrenia and that he was homeless at the time of the incident because he was kicked out of his home by his mother. But, Webb said those were not excuses for Lewis's behavior.
"He brought this on himself and he knows that," Webb said.
The break-in and shooting happened May 6 near 67th Avenue and Indian School Road.
Bulk told police that she saw Lewis looking through the door of her home and called police, according to Phoenix police. Lewis then used a gardening tool to break the door and enter the home, police said.
Bulk armed herself with a handgun and hid in the bathroom, police said. Lewis followed her and punched her in the face.
Bulk's attempts to hide from Lewis in the bathroom and her exchange with him after she defended herself were captured on a 911 call that underscored the life-or-death situation the homeowner was in.
Michael Lewis: Ow! (Expletive.) What was that? What was that? What was that? (Expletive) did you do?
Dispatcher: What happened?
Homeowner: Did you think you could beat me half to death?
Michael Lewis: I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
Homeowner: What did you come in my house for?
Homeowner: I shot him.
Dispatcher: You shot him?
Michael Lewis: Oh my God!
Bulk shot Lewis one time, and he was arrested when police arrived. He was released from the hospital almost a month later.
