David Hartline Shot Two Men to Death
In August 2010 an ex-boyfriend arrived at a Dawnville (Geo.) home drunk and creating a disturbance. A woman dialed 911 and reached the adjacent county on her cellular phone.
She asked for police to respond. Instead, the Murray County dispatcher relayed a BOLO to Whitfield County, where the caller was located. Four hours later, David Hartline returned, shot two men to death, and he then was fatally shot by one of the victims.
Murray County officials defended their action to only relay BOLO information to Whitfield County, instead of transferring the call or asking for a response.
3 dead in Whitfield County shooting, 1 injured
DAWNVILLE, WHITFIELD COUNTY (WRCB) – A birthday party turned into the scene of a multiple homicide at home in Whitfield County on Thursday night.
Investigators say three men, including the suspect, were killed and a woman was wounded at the home on Rainbow Circle.
According to Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood, six children were at the party for one of Mindy Nicole Bullard's children.
Sheriff Chitwood says that at some point, Bullard's father, 61-year-old Edward "Buster" Manz, and Bullard, asked Bullard's ex-boyfriend, David Hartline, 41, to leave because he appeared to be intoxicated.
The argument between Hartline and Manz became heated and that's when investigators say Hartline began shooting.
According to the police report, Bullard called 911 saying that Hartline was going to shoot her.
Caller: There is a guy with a gun in my house. I need the law. The guy has a gun in the house.
Caller: 1571 Rainbow Circle. Ya'll hide in the attic.
Dispatcher: Rainbow Circle?
Caller: Yes, hurry please. Please he's got a gun. Hurry.
Dispatcher: Who has a gun?
Dispatcher: Ma'am, who has a gun?
Caller: Hartline. He's a felon. Please hurry. Send the law.
Investigators say Bullard told the children to go hide in the attic. Deputies tell Eyewitness News the oldest of the children, age 15, ran to a neighbor's house for help.
Deputies arriving at the scene, say they found Mindy Bullard in the backyard, she had 3 gunshots to the legs and broken legs, apparently from jumping a second story window.
When deputies entered the house they say the found Buster Manz and Bullard's ex-husband, Kenny Simonson, dead, both from multiple gunshot wounds.
Upstairs, deputies say they found David Hartline, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Hamilton Medical Center, where later died of his injuries.
Investigators say they found a total of 20-25 shell casings in the home.
Sheriff Chitwood says Bullard's wounds are not life-threatening.
DAWNVILLE, WHITFIELD (WRCB) - Mindy Bullard's family spoke with Channel 3 Friday. Their account matches what we heard on the 911 tapes.
The family says her ex-boyfriend David Hartline was possessive, and obsessive.
The family didn't want to be identified on camera.
They told Channel 3 they wanted Hartline out of her life, but they never expected what happened Thursday night.
"The two men that were there were great people," says the relative. "They walked into this and now their lives are gone."
Besides the horror of losing their grandfather, and for three of Bullard's children, their father, the six children who were home when David Hartline snapped and opened fire, also have to live with what they saw.
"The younger ones are doing good," says the relative. "The older ones have their moments of course."
Right before Hartline burst into the upstairs room, Bullard hid her children in an attic crawl space, but through the slats in the wood they saw and heard everything.
"They're visualizing it every second," says the relative. Bullard's children are now staying with this same relative. "They saw everything, the blood, the gun shots, everything."
Bullard's relatives and her two older daughters told us David Hartline wouldn't leave Bullard alone.
"He was infatuated with her," says the relative. "He wouldn't not leave her alone."
The family says they believe it was the presence of Bullard's ex-husband at the birthday party that sent Hartline over the edge.
"He said if he finds the kids he will kill them too," the relative says.
Even though family members say they didn't like Hartline and wanted him out of their lives, they never expected this type of violence.
"Some of the kids didn't like him. They were just like, 'Mom please get away from him.' She didn't believe he would ever hurt them."
Mindy Bullard's family tells us she underwent surgery Friday afternoon on her ankle. She shattered it when she jumped out the window to escape Hartline.
The family is asking the community to help them any way they can. A fund for Mindy Bullard and her family has been set up at the First Bank of Dalton.
