Statutory Rape - Legitimate or Bullshit?

Of course, with this and other laws, there are always cases which are blatant disregaurd to the law itsself, but of course there are actually good arguments to be made on the defendant's behalf. What do you think? The main point of this thread is to encourage different opinions and, also, to get you to think "out of the box" so to speak and look at other perspectives.

I'm not talking about those perverted assholes who knowingly sleep with someone that's 12, but for argument's sake, let's say someone my age, 23, was browsing a friend's friend list on myspace and saw someone that I found cute, and I check out her personal page, and the age provided indicated that she's over the age of consent and all other information on the page doesn't relate to Miley Cyrus or whatever else teeney bopper shit is popular right now, but rather it's talking about mature subject matter, not necissarily sexual in nature, but more along the lines of someone intelligent and reads lots of classic liturature or philosophy or something that would normally be above a teenager's head.

So you contact that individual and decide to meet in person after talking on the internet for a while and you slept with her and never had any clue until her father dials the last number on her cell phone when she couldn't tell why she didn't come home that morning. Something along those lines.

According to the law, every age of consent is different in every state, but the same sanctions apply. If convicted(even unknowingly!) you still have to register as a Sex Offender and all that crap. There's really no excuse or reason that a lawyer could use to even possibly beat a case like this. It's sad and these little girls are tricking a lot of seemingly innocent men. Even if they are able to get into a bar or club and you take them home, you're still fucked.

Anyway, that being said this is a tough one. On one hand, I'm not going to lie. There are sixteen year olds that I think are attractive. Now would I sleep with one? Well no. For one, it's against the law, and two, sixteen year olds are stupid for the most part and they as a group, they annoy the hell out of me. In other words, the juice just isn't worth the squeeze.

I'm a conservative by no means, but in my opinion 18 years old should be the legal age of consent. I guess I think about it from the angle of a parent, I know if I had a daughter I would like to have at least 18 years before I have to worry about the thirty year old down the street trying to pork the shit out of her.
