RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil
A pregnant woman was forgotten inside an ambulance and wound up in a mechanic's shop instead of the hospital, a Brazilian newspaper reported Saturday.

Maria Adelaide Azevedo, 41 and eight months pregnant, complained of high blood pressure and was referred by her doctor to a hospital for a checkup in the southern city Sao Jeronimo, some 1,200 kilometres southeast of Rio, Zero Hora newspaper reported.

The ambulance picked her up but drove straight past the hospital and parked in a mechanic's shop in the neighbouring town Charqueadas, the paper said.

The hospital was not named.

Mother and child were in good health but her gynecologist Helio Redecker was indignant.

"Imagine if she had fallen asleep or fainted? How long would she have stayed in the ambulance?" he told the paper.

"It's a tremendous lack of care with a human being."

the pregnant woman sitting in the back of your ambulance.
