Obsessed loner that scrubbed his home and body with Dettol died from "overexposure"

The Daily Record

Quote:

Recluse obsessed with scrubbing his home and body with Dettol died from "overexposure" to the disinfectant.

Jacques Niemand, 42, was dubbed The Dettol Man by children, an inquest heard, because he used huge quantities of the product to clean his flat and himself.

After his death, more than 100 bottles of the solution were found in his home, along with buckets full of the cleaning fluid.

Police who went into the flat in Didsbury, Manchester, had to take sick leave with aches and pains after being sickened by the stench of Dettol.

The inquest found that Mr Niemand's over-exposure to the disinfectant resulted in a lack of oxygen getting into his system.

His sister, Ruth Bain, told the hearing in Manchester she would not go into his home because it was "stifling".

She added that her brother had suffered from an obsessive cleaning disorder for years.

He had not seen his GP for 15 years because he feared being taken into hospital under mental health laws.

Recording a verdict of misadventure, deputy coroner Leonard Gorodkin said: "Obviously, he was a very difficult man to look after but I feel that this was an accidental death."

Weird but at least he had a clean exit.
