A 15-year-old girl was sentenced on Thursday to seven years in prison and 10 years of probation for stabbing her foster brother to death.

Latosha Marks, who pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of 14-year-old DeShawn Hutchinson, sat emotionless in the courtroom as she learned her fate.

DeShawn Hutchinson's body was found dumped in the woods, behind the Southside apartment where he lived with his killer.

The boy's biological mother, June Hutchinson, did not agree with the Marks' sentence and said the teenage girl who took her son's life should pay with her own life. However, Marks could be free by the time she's 21-years-old.

"I still can't sleep and it's bothering me badly. That was my child," said June Hutchinson. "She's a child still, but just like they give adults time they should give her time. Murder's a murder."

Shorstein said Marks was tried as an adult. In fact, he said, as far as he can remember, she's the youngest girl ever prosecuted as an adult in Duval County.

"We consider this an extremely tragic case," said State Attorney Harry Shorstein. "You have a very young defendant who was 14 years old at the time of the crime and of course another young victim."

Shorstein said the entire crime is a tragic reminder of a system that failed both DeShawn Hutchinson and Marks.

"Considering all that, she was prosecuted as an adult and given an adult sentence that we believe was appropriate," Shorstein said.

The Department of Corrections will soon decide whether Marks will serve her time in an adult prison or in a juvenile facility.

In addition to the time she will spend behind bars and on probation, Marks will also have to undergo psychiatric counseling.

The victim, still not being named, was killed Friday night, according to police reports. He was reported missing Sunday from Southwind Villas on Newton Road. The body was found about 1 p.m. Monday in woods south of Beach and Southside boulevards. The cause of death and positive identity were being established by the medical examiner.
Tuesday morning, police announced that Latosha Renee Marks -- who lived in the same foster family as the victim -- was charged with murder and Reggie Riquay Griffin was charged with accessory after the fact to murder. Both are listed as residents of Southwind Villas.
According to the arrest report, Marks admitted to police she stabbed the boy several times Friday night because she was angry that he had punched her in the stomach earlier that evening. Police divers searched a retention pond Tuesday, looking for the murder weapon.

While Griffin is charged only with accessory after the fact, police said he admitted to holding the victim down while Marks attacked him, then put the body in a creek and covered it with palm fronds.

Both appeared before a juvenile judge Tuesday morning and were ordered held without bond.

I work with a girl who use to be foster sisters with her. I cant reveal any more info on the girl, but yeah. She was telling me about this. She claimed she helped move the body. Dont know if its true about moving the body but I did do research and it is true they use to be foster sisters.

I was in a RTF with Latosha and she seemed really cool. She was quite and laidback. She did have her moments but then again we all did. I never thought she would be capable of doing something this severe. I was shocked when they told us what she did.
