It's a brutal use of power, however, it's well within reason. They were being charged by an angry group of men who were armed and ready to do harm. Yes, they had blades, but that doesn't mean the men with guns can just ignore that. A gun might be a better weapon, but a knife will still kill you. They had to open fire.
