Elephant Man
James O'Neal, a grocery store cashier in Redmond, Wash., suffers from a genetic condition called neurofibromatosis that left his face disfigured; he compares his appearance to that of the "Elephant Man." Now, his customers and friends are raising money to help him have reconstructive facial surgery that will offer him a more normal appearance.

Re: Elephant Man
Proteus syndrome is very weird. It's so rare because it involves a double genetic error. First, the baby has to get one dysfunctional copy of a certain growth-regulator gene. Then, at some point in embryonic development, one cell has to undergo another random mutation that disables its other copy of the same gene. If it happens very early, like in the first few cells of the embryo, up to half the body can basically become one unregulated tumor.

You're absolutely right there moticos, I have that on DVD. I had the honour & pleasure of seeing Merrick's skeleton in the Royal London hospital along with his enormous hat and a paper church he made when I was a mortician - we had secret access to places |
